Stone setting in metal clay

Class Title: Stone setting in metal clay

Class Description:

In this two day long session you’ll learn stone setting in PMC (Precious Metal Clay). PMC is real silver suspended in a clay-like medium. It’s non-toxic and requires very little training or special equipment.

On day 1 the instructor will guide you through a project that emphasizes how to work with the clay and utilize proper stone setting and construction techniques. With an emphasis on dry to dry construction you’ll create a pendant or earrings and embellish them with fire-in-place gemstones.

Demos will be given using round, square, marquis, oval and trillion shapes. For this class we’ll use cz’s and synthetics however information on using natural gemstones will be presented.

You can create a design with a solitary stone or multiples to create a cluster. Setting gemstone clusters can add drama and elegance to a design. With this simple metal clay stone setting technique you can set just about any fireable gemstone from marquis to princess cut.

On day 2 we’ll continue the class with a torch firing demo to learn the difference between torching with and without a stone. Then we’ll explore patinas and you’ll learn different ways to finish your jewelry by hand and by using the flexshaft. You’ll leave with completed pieces of silver jewelry designed by YOU, handouts & resources, and the skills necessary to make fine silver jewelry, from start to finish, in your own home.
